Character Fashion Inspiration: Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) from “The Hunger Games”

21 Aug

Happy Hunger Games! Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock or cut off from all contact with the outside world, you are aware that The Hunger Games was released on DVD this past Saturday. Super fans can now watch the film adaptation of the overwhelmingly popular novel over, and over, and over… Well, you get the idea. Being a big fan of the book myself, I loved the movie and am really looking forward to watching it again. One thing about the adaptation that I was happy about was the way they kept so much (not everything, but a lot of it) true to the story from the book. Including the fashion. It was amazing to see the futuristic clothing, makeup and hairstyles from the Capitol come to life on the big screen.

Those looks are cool and all, but they’re not really practical for my everyday look. But with Fall just around the corner and an itch for my favorite season’s clothing coming on strong, what is practical for me is Katniss Everdeen’s District 12 look. Consisting of weathered leather, tall boots and rugged jackets, her style was right up my alley (minus the whole hunting in the woods aspect).

Here are some items I feel are very Katniss-worthy that I would love to add to my wardrobe.

Katniss Riding Boots
Katniss Jackets
Katniss Bag

Is your fashion more along the lines of Katniss or Effie from The Hunger Games?

Casting “Catching Fire”

24 Mar

Now that we have all seen The Hunger Games (if you have not yet then I’m sorry but you are missing out on greatness) there is only one thing we can think of: when can we see Catching Fire? I Googled this minutes after leaving the theater yesterday, and found the answer to be very disappointing. It has been announced that the sequel to The Hunger Games will ignite theaters next Thanksgiving. As in November 22, 2013. That’s over a year away, y’all! What on Earth are we going to do until then??

The first thing that I am going to do is speculate about who will be cast in Catching Fire, particularly for the characters of Finnick Odair, Johanna Mason, Bettee and Wiress (aka Nuts and Volts). In Catching Fire, (spoiler alert!!!) Peeta and Katniss find themselves thrust back into the Hunger Games by the evil President Snow (hiss!), along with two former male and female victors from each District. So basically, they have to fight to the death again, but this time in a completely different (and insane) arena and with seasoned pros who have all won the Games in the past. Sounds like another epic movie to me! Here are some of the actors/actresses that I think will be good choices for each of the characters I mentioned above, let me know what you think!

Finnick Odair

Finnick is the male tribute from District 4, the fishing industry of Panem. He is described by the author, Suzanne Collins, as having Godlike beauty, with emerald eyes, golden hair, a tan body to die for, and a charm that makes the ladies swoon. And on top of all that, he’s lethal with a fishing net and trident. He will be a major character in the next two movies, so they need to pick someone with good acting skills and a physical description liken to the features I just mentioned (except for maybe the killing people with a trident thing). This is the character that I am MOST excited to see cast.

Garrett Hedlund - most recently seen in Tron and Country Strong, Hedlund is an excellent actor with the charm, wit, and looks to support Finnick.

Armie Hammer - Currently playing the Prince in Mirror Mirror, you may remember him from The Social Network. Maybe not the best acting skills, but Armie most resembles Finnick in my mind.

Jensen Ackles - I watch him weekly on the CW series Supernatural and I gotta say, he's got the green eyes, blonde hair and alluring charisma that Finnick possesses.

Johanna Mason

Johanna is the female tribute from District 7, and won her games by pretending to be weak and helpless so the other tributes would ignore her and not see her as a threat. When there were only a few contestants left, she made her move and proved to be a vicious killer. Johanna is cunning, raw, outspoken and has no inhibitions. I imagine her as a petite brunette.

Mila Kunis - When my husband and I were speculating about actresses for Johanna and I said Mila Kunis, we both said "YES!" After seeing her in Black Swan, I think she's got what it takes to play Johanna Mason.

Kristen Bell - This feisty actress is known as the voice of Gossip Girl and as long as she doesn't have a meltdown over a sloth, I think she'd be great as Johanna.

Kate Mara - You may have seen her lately on the series American Horror Story. Kate is the sister of recent superstar Rooney Mara, and playing Johanna Mason may be just what she needs to become a superstar, herself.

Beetee

Beetee is the male tribute from District 3 and will also play a large part in the next two movies. Beetee is an older tribute, having won the Hunger Games long ago. A technical genius and inventor, Katniss is reminded of a school teacher when speaking with him. He may not possess physical strength in the arena, but he definitely can outsmart the other tributes.

William H. Macy - Probably best known for his role in Fargo, Macy is an accomplished actor that can transform into any character. He is my #1 pick for the brainy Beetee.

Michael Emerson - We all know him as Benjamin Linus from Lost. Emerson has a certain "mad scientist" quality about him that could be perfect for the portrayal of Beetee.

Wiress

Wiress is the female victor from District 3. She is much like Beetee in that she is a genius, but is a little bit more…shall we say “koo-koo”… earning her the nickname “Nuts” by the other tributes. She leaves sentences unfinished and can only be understood by Beetee, but her brilliance plays a tremendous part in solving the biggest mystery of the arena in Catching Fire.

Helena Bonham Carter - Is there really any other choice for who to play Wiress?? Two words, people: TICK TOCK.

I’d love to hear who your picks are for the actors of Catching Fire. Do you agree with any of my choices?

Yes. I did it. I finally read the first Hunger Games book, in exactly one day. I had an 8 am flight from Pittsburgh to Memphis to Nashville, so around 6:30 or so after making my way through security in Pittsburgh, I wandered into one of the airport bookstores. About 20 hours later, I'd finished reading it. Actually, I don't think what I did was "read" that book, it was something more akin to ravenously devouring it, only stopping occasionally to eat, drink, and pee.

I thought this was hilarious and so true!
